If you have come to this page, privacy probably is an important topic to you. Right now, we are only collecting email addresses of people who sign up on our landing page. How we handle that data is explained in our privacy policy below. However, you might be more interested in how your privacy will be protected in our final software.
As a general principle: We will not sell your data to third parties or use it for targeted advertising. We will finance ourselves through paid subscriptions and will not show any ads. We will only collect the bare minimum of data that is necessary to offer our services. You can delete your account, or email us to have it deleted, at any time.
Our software will consist of two parts: a browser extension that translates words on websites that you read, and a web app for learning exercises. The translation requires running computation-heavy algorithms and thus needs to be performed on our servers. For this, we send the textual content of the websites that you visit to our servers. We do not store this text and delete it immediately after it has been translated. We do not use any third-party translation services—all data is processed by ourselves, on servers located in Germany. We offer the option to disable Timely for any website that you want.
The only thing that we store are the foreign words that you have been exposed to, which is necessary for tracking your learning progress and offering a personalized learning progression scheme. For example, let's say you read the sentence "The chien is barking". The information that we store about this is: "The user has seen the vocabulary (dog, chien) at time T.” If you have given feedback on whether you knew or did not know the word, we store that as well.
The learning exercises in the web app will all, in some form, ask you to recall an element of the foreign language that you have seen before (a word, a grammar rule, etc.) and rate how difficult that was. We store this difficulty rating together with the language element in your user profile to determine which language elements to schedule next.
The information we collect is the bare minimum necessary to offer our product.
